1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
I feel like I run better first thing in the morning.
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
I like to start fast and settle in to my pace.
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
Somewhere around 4 miles I start getting that second wind feeling.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
Not sure I have a favorite yet. I've done a few 5k's but I'm not sure they're my favorite.
I feel as if i run best in the afternoon although the sun is beaming hardest at the time.
I used to start fast but just recently i have started a race off at a pace that i can continue all the way and found it is a very useful tactic.
Second wind???
Favorite race length??? Is 5 meters an option??? J/k I seem to do best at 3200 m. I prefer them over 5k but im not that experienced of a runner yet so i have plenty of room to change.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
I run best about 2 hours after waking up.
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
I start fast, settle in and finish off at that pace.
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
I have noticed that mine changes. I actually started tracking it on my log. It seems that it takes longer for me now to get to that point and it settles in now at about 4-5 miles...when I first started running it was at the 2-3 mark.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
I've only done a 5k so far and I'm training for a half marathon right now. I like running around 8 miles for training. It's enough to feel really good after and not fatiguing.
ellimnist,
second wind is the litte adreniline kick you get. You'll feel like your breathing suddenly gets easier and you can pick up your pace.
1) doesnt matter
2)Training runs i start slow then fast sometimes but not always
3) second winds? hmmm sometimes i'll start daydreaming about a big race past or future that will give me a little shot of adrenaline and ill speed up. But I never knew people regularly got 2nd winds at certain points in their runs, sounds like a runners world myth to me (along with "runner's high"). If you do then you need to take some time to warm up.
4) 1500m/mile, The mile gives me the simple pleasure of flying around the track at very fast paces. I'm not a huge fan of the 5k and 10k i dont like at all. I hate just trotting around the first few miles waiting to actually start racing.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
Morning, definitely.
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
I start training runs slow and work up to my pace. I start races fast (not too fast) and work down to a pace that's faster than my training pace.
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
Around 31/2 to 4 miles.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
My faorite is the 10K, but I alwo like the 15K.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
Either is good for me, as long as I am mentally ready
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
I start out easy, then work to my comfortable pace
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
After 5 kms I start to feel like I have hit my rythym. It is not a second wind for me. I notice happy endorphins kick in after about 30 mins for me. I know that I get a HUGE adrenillin rush as I approach home - it is awesome.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
Having done a couple of 8kms, 15kms and 3 half marathons - so far I would to say the half. Mostly because of the challenge it gives me.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
Much, much faster if I run in the evening. But I always start my long runs early (to get them over and done with)
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
I used to start fast, settle in, then finish fast. Now I try and keep a steady pace. It seems to help.
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
I usally find at about 5kms I settle into a good breathing pattern. Never really get a second wind. But when I turn for home I feel pretty good.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
I used to like running 5k fast....
1. Morning, definitely. I am from Charleston, SC and it is way too hot to run in the afternoons and by evening I am settling in for the night (maybe because I have to wake up so early in the am to run??). i usually walk my dogs around the block twice before my run to get my legs moving and get the dogs some exercise and then go for my run.
2. It usually takes me a 1/2 mile or so to start feeling good and loose and then I run at my normal pace. I have to admit that I am just starting to do speed training with intervals on a track and I HATE it. I enjoy just running at a steady pace for miles at a time but I am training for the Atlanta marathon and I have to be done in 5 hours because it is on Thanksgiving holiday and they close the track in 5 hours so the workers can go home. My half marahon pace is 2 hours, 24 minutes so I want to get a little faster to be further on the inside of 5 hours.
3. Second wind - hmmm - sometimes this happens for me - sometimes not.
4. Don't have a favorite race length yet but think it will be the half or full marathon. I really use running as a meditation in motion and truly enjoy just getting out there and running for a long time.
1) Definitely in the morning. Best if I've eaten some oatmeal about 45 mins prior.
2) I start slow and keeping picking up the pace throughout. I typically use the first mile or so to get warmed up and do it in 9:15 or so, after that I either settle in at around 8:30 OR if running <6-7 miles, try to pick up the pace with each mile.
3) I generally get my second wind around 30 mins into the run. This corresponds to about 4 miles or so, maybe a little less.
4) I've not run enough races (only 1 since high school) to know. I really liked the 4 person marathon relay I ran in June - 6.55 miles was ideal for me then. Now, I think a 1/2 marathon may be the right lenght. I've got one coming up in Nov and another in Feb so we'll see.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
Hmm... I mostly run in the mornings mainly because of my work schedule. The few times I've had to run in the afternoon/evenings, I believe I have run better but I think it has more to do with the ambient temperature than the time of day.
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
Always start slower on my training runs as that forms part of my warm up.
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
I find there are three distinct stages in my runs. Firstly, I definitely "warm up" between 6:00 and 7:00 minutes into a run. At that point I can feel a warmth spread through my body and the first hints of a sweat breaking out. As far as a true second wind goes, I get it after about 12 - 15k so only really get it during a 1/2 or full marathon.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
The half marathon, hands down.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
Well now that all depends. On number of beers consumed the night before, time I got to bed, how late I had to work, what time I ran the day before and etc… Over all I run best when I start at 10:18 am
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to
I Run with a Polar computer so I try to manage the run throughout but if I run with out it my natural instinct is to run hard and drop into a measured pace.3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
About five miles or 35 minutes which ever comes first.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
I don’t run a lot of races but at this point it would have to be a 10k.
1. Evening all the way. I tried first thing in the morning for about a year and it didn't work for me. I simply could not run very far/fast. I started evening runs about six weeks ago and it's wonderful.
2. I start slow, then work my way up to a comfortable pace.
3. *laugh*
4. I don't race.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
Doesn't matter, it's all about temperature. I can't run in the heat of the afternoon, but am fine on a cold day.
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
Warm up to normal pace
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
Fall into a comfortable rhythm after 2-3 miles
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
5Ks, but working up to 10K and half marathon
1. Definately in the mornings...as soon as I wake up. If I get this least bit distracted between the bed to the front door, it gets harder....lol
2. I always seem to start a little fast in training...then pace out. But....im only in my first month..so it's hard to determine.
3. Im only up to 5 miles, but I seem to be getting a kick right in the middle of my runs....3 mile mark or so.
4. Ive only done 5ks in the past....except..in track and field the 1500m/mile was definately my favorite. A great distance to run fast and not burn out. My next race is a 10k...we'll see if I can actually call that a favorite...;)
1. I WISH I liked running in the mornings, but the truth is I can run faster and longer after work. Unless it's a hot day, in which case I want to die. But I like running after work; I get kind of excited about it and map out runs when I'm bored, haha.
2. I start nice and slow, almost ridiculously slow. Then I naturally increase speed without even trying, then...
3. I get a nice little burst at about mile 3 or 4. It only lasts maybe 5-8 minutes though. And I don't get this burst when i start out too fast.
4. I've done a 10k and a 5k. The 10k was a lot more rewarding, and more fun overall. The 5k was fun, especially since people weren't taking it too seriously, but it just felt too short.
1. Doesn't really matter.
2. Slow at first, otherwise I'll end up running way too fast (enough painful 5Ks have reminded me of that mistake)
3. Completely random; though these days I feel stronger the more miles I run
4. 5Ks...more experience than at any other distance.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
It's all about the temperature and the amount of time I have for it. Anytime I can get out the door is a good time.
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
Start slow to warm up, then increase to a normal pace.
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
Seem like it it usually our 4-5 miles.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
Only one race (10K) under my belt, so far. I'll defer this one till another time.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
I run in the mornings to get my day started though sometimes i wait for evening.
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
I start at a pace that I know will challenge me for the entore route.
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
After I get past the 1 mile mark I'm warm and limber and have no troubles. The rush comes at the last few miles or so of a race when i know that I no longer need to pace myself.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
5k is a good distance to race. They dont take much time and can be run at a fast pace but are still long enough to be fun.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
I prefer early in the morning when the streets are empty, but as it gets colder I might switch to after work.
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
I start off fast and then settle into a pace, although I've been trying to do a better job of evening things out for the duration.
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
I don't usually get a second wind during normal runs, but on my Sunday 10 mile run I feel a little stronger at about mile 7, but that could just be because it coincides with the worst portion of my route having just ended.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
Right now it is 5k, but I'll be running my first marathon next spring, so we'll see.
1. Definitely in the morning. I typically run in the afternoon though.
2. Start fast and settle into my pace. I'm working on evening things out. Although, I have found that if I start slower I usually end much slower (so starting fast keeps me running at a faster pace throughout the race).
3. 6.5 to 7 miles into my runs I start to get into a good rythym.
4. I'm a fan of 5Ks since I can use my speed to my advantage (6:00 - 6:15 miles). However, the longer my runs have become the more I've realized that my speed doesn't drop off as much as I thought it would (still keep 6:40 - 7:00 miles during half-marathons). I haven't completed a marathon but will before the end of next year so we'll see what kind of speeds I can keep for that distance.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
Really isnt much of a difference if I run in the morning, afternoon, or night. But im gonna have to say afternoon because thats when all my practices are after school.
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
I start off way to fast all the time, at least in 5k's. Its not that I really want to, but it just happens some how haha. I usually go through my first mile in the 5:30's.
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
The last 400m of a 5k race haha.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
I love 5k's but I also love the 3200m, seems I was best at that freshman year of high school (Now a sophmore) and the 1600m is pretty cool also.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
Morning in the summer; afternoon in the winter.
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
Start slow for ~0.5 mile, then steadily increase pace.
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
Around 6-7 miles; sometimes a "3rd" wind around 13.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
Don't race, but if I did it would be the half marathon.
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
Always better in the morning. Up and dressed into running gear before breakfast - that makes sure I do go out.
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
Start fast then settle into regular pace.
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
Feel significantly more relaxed after 15 mins.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
Each new achievement has become my favourite - 5k first, now 10k because it feels like a 'proper run' that you have to have worked hard to achieve when you're a beginner.
P.S. - can anyone tell me how to add a photo to my profile on this site?

Really interesting to read everyone's responses - I'm fairly new to running so threads like this are really helpful in 'calibrating' how I'm feeling in comparison with other runners. Here are my answers
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
I only run first thing in the morning (easiest time of day to fit a run into my schedule) so I've no idea how I might feel differently running in the afternoon or evening - will be interesting to find out!
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
As I'm pretty much straight out of bed and into my run I like to start at my 'regular' pace and save any speedier work 'til later in the run when my body has had a chance to properly warm up
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
Not sure about this but I have noticed that on my longer runs, that's still only 10km for me, I seem to reach a level of comfort (definitely the wrong word but you get the idea!) at around the 6km mark and for a while I feel like I could run forever at that pace. doesn't last though.
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
I've yet to race (not really why I started running) but I do enjoy my 10km runs at the weekend
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
I've only run in the afternoon & night because of my classes, I like nights best
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
I usually run a mile around 5 minutes to warm up, and then go not quite as fastand lock in
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
3 or 4 miles, somewhere in there
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
I haven't run many races, but I transisioned from track in high school to cross country in college, so I'm not really sure. 5k? 10k? I'm game.
1- Mornings, specially before breakfast (for short runs).
2- Same pace always. If tired at the end, the pace is slower!
3- Between 1 and 1 1/2 miles.
4- 10Ks.
Pedro
1. Do you run better in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
I feel best in the morning, but I do best in the evening
2. Start your run fast, and settle in to your pace, start slow and work up to your pace, or something else?
I always start slower and work my way up
3. How far into your run do you get your "second wind"?
I have to convince myself that I'm not going to die for about the first 3 miles... after that I love running
4. What's your favorite length race, if you have one?
I'm not particularly fond of 5k's..... they end just when I start feeling good. So far my favorite's a half marathon, but I'm still pretty new
