    Running shoe experts,

I had my gait analysed this morning and was deemed to be a moderate over-pronator. Not seriously, but need a structured shoe. I have a wide foot (2E) and weigh about 90kg.

The RunningWorld sales assistent pointed me in the direction of the Asics Evolution 4. But from what I can see, these are really more for VERY bad over-pronators - even called 'Motion Control' by Asics. They don't stock the Adrenalines in a 2E width, only D (which I used to have, but blew-out the sides) . I'm a bit worried that I'm getting a lot more shoe and support than I need.

    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

If you are truly a moderate over-pronator (along with about 70% of the population) then the Evolution probably is more shoe than you need. It's always difficult to answer questions about the "right shoe" without seeing your foot, gait, etc. so I'm answering your question based on the info that you provided.

If the store steered you toward the Evolution simply because it was the only shoe that they had in your width that had at least enough stability then I would suggest visiting another store or asking them to order a couple more moderate stability shoes such as the Adrenaline in your width so that you can compare them. The whole reason to go to a running specialty store is to get the right shoe for your individual needs. However, they may have other reasons that they are steering you toward the Evolution such as your weight so you may want to ask them why they feel that the Evolution is the right shoe for you. Just for you info the Adrenaline is available in both 2E and 4E widths.

Just went and got fitted myself. Came home with the Asics Gel Fortitude 3 (2E). The other option I had at the end of the trials was the NB 1011. Couldn't feel any difference between the two and the sales guy surprised me by suggesting going with the cheaper of the two. In analyzing my run he said I was normal, which also surprised me cuz I walk like a duck, not so much the waddling part but exactly on the toes aiming out. My old shoes are worn most on the outside heels and slightly outside on the balls of my feet. I got home and see that the Gel Fortitude 3 is for maximum support, same category as Evolution 4. This doesn't make sense to me either. If I am normal, why the need for so much support? Or is this just a terminology thing that I don't get?

I just looked on Asics site again and see the pronation range is quite wide. So maybe it is right. And on the US site they don't use the term "Motion Control". Could be the same as "Maximum Support". I'm going with trusting the guy in front of me that should know more than me. Especially after he sold me the cheaper one when he could have made up any reason for me to upgrade. So I'll give it a week of running and then figure out if it seems right. If you haven't got yours yet, I'll let you know how these work out. I hope to get in about 25 miles a week if that reference helps at all.

My hubby bought me a pair of Adrenaline GTS a couple of weeks ago for my birthday.  At first they seemed too big and bulky as I wasn't used to a shoe for my gait (I can't remember exactly what kind of pronator, but I used to have high arches, as they seem to be gradually falling.), and I sort of thought the little sales guy had lost his mind.   Now that I am used to them, they are excellent for my feet and my stride!  I think anything else would have been too much for my feet.  Don't know if this helps, but that's my only insight!

    Thanks everyone,

I ended up going with the Evolution 4's as it was going to take me a long time to get my hands on some Adrenaline's in 2E (I would have to import them).

So far I'm still getting used to the new shoes. After 60km they have started to feel ok, but I'm still getting a small blister on the bottom of each heel where the insole meets the upper. I'm taping my heels and hopefully a callus will develop soon and I wont have to  worry anymore. In terms of support they are fine, my shins are a bit sore, but I think that has more to do with overdoing things that the shoes. Ankles, hips and back are great.

I'm sure the support is there, they just aren't the nicest I've ever run in. I think I'm going to try and get some Adrenaline's as my next shoe in a few months.

    Thanks again for everyone's input

I've used Brooks GTS and Gel Evolution (but III, not IV).  I found the Gel Evolution really nice, but stiff and once I got inserts, I didn't need quite the intensity of the Gel Evolution.  I really like the GTS, I did a marathon in them and it was good. I also have used NB 882 (I've gone through a few pairs) and I'm thinking of returning to the GTS as I really liked them. I do find them a little snug with inserts.

I have a very broad foot and found Brooks GTS to suit this with minimal run in time required if any.

My Asics Gel Fortitude 3 (2E) feel great. At least when I have the right socks on. Did my break-in 25 miles and haven't felt any issues.

Another thumbs up for the GTS from me.  Could never run and finally got these after going through the tests and well never looked back, bough my 3rd pair recently.  Love them.
